Power of Meister Eckhart

I have read the Selective Writings many times.  I find the Meister Eckhart teachings to be one of the best and straight forward (easiest)  examples of transformative writings.  I am afraid that intellect plays a very little role in the main approach of Meister Eckhart.  Intellect itself is mentioned in the whole book only couple of times.  This is again the language problem that results in misrepresentation of these beautiful teachings.   If we think of the intellect as reasoning in the sense of using our mind intellectually, meaning; thinking- this is not the same intellect that Eckhart talks about.  There are many examples throughout the whole writings that the thinking itself is rather an obstacle.  In sermon 6, page 10:  “This real possession of God is to be found in the heart, in inner motion of the spirit towards him and striving for him and not just in thinking about him always and in the same way.For that would be beyond the capacity of our nature and would be very difficult to achieve and would not even be the best thing to do.  We should not content ourselves with a God of thoughts for, when the thoughts come to an end, so too shall God.” (10) As Eckhart says:” take leave of yourself. Truly, if you do not depart from yourself, then wherever you take refuge, you will find obstacles and unrest” (6).  It is imperative to understand, not intellectually, what he means by taking  leave of yourself.  As long as you are lost in the intellectual analysis; you are not taking leave of yourself, but merely strengthening yourself.

Intellectual approach requires  multiplicity in our analysis; obviously we have to separate in order to measure.  Intellectual approach means separation and multiplicity in order to compare.  Obviously this very approach leads towards more confusion and separation from what Meister calls the God. The importance of simplicity is mentioned over and over in his writings:  “See, as he is one and simple, that is how he can enter this oneness, which I call the citadel of the soul, and in no other way he can enter it” (164).  If the intellectual approach is thinking, which obviously means dividing and in which of course we are operating in the field of time, than this kind of intellectual approach has very little value!  You can not abide in God if thinking. Time is a movement of thought and time is another obstacle to God:“ It is necessary truth that all time must disappear where this birth begins, for there is nothing that so impedes it as time and creatures.  It is certain truth that time by its  nature can touch neither God nor the soul.  If the soul could be touched by time, she would not be the soul, and if God could be touched by time, he would not be a God.  If the soul could be touched by time, than God could never be born in her, and she could never be born in God” (113)  It is therefore very important to understand the problem of time which comes into existence through thinking; and if intellectual approach means thinking in this given question, than of course we cutting ourselves from any actual understanding.  It is very clearly stated when Meister says: “I was free of ego-attachment to them in what I did or in what I refrained from doing, neither with a’ before’ or an ‘after’, but rather I remained free and empty in this present moment for the most precious will of God” (159).  Person can not under any circumstances remained free and empty if he is lost in the intellectual approach, which implies thinking and thinking implies being lost in time and time implies ego and ego implies denial of God.

All aspect of time and thinking and ego are extremely interrelated; they are one and the same; without one the other would not be, and if intellect is all that, that obviously intellect in this sense is not what Meister Eckhart meant by the word intellect.  I am sure that he did not think of the intellect as we are use to think of the intellect.  It is more about: “essential is-ness in simple unity without distinction” (157), and intellectual approach implies distinction and analysis and of course in analysis there is time and multiplicity. Person can not reach God intellectually, Eckhart writes: “Therefore our lord says:’ Whoever wishes to follow me must forsake themselves’(Luke 9:23)” (173), and of course if you are lost in the intellectual approach who is operating?  It is “me”; the one who ought to be forsaken!   The very intellect is the little self which is the obstacle to God, because you are choosing your outer self instead of God, that’s what intellect is; it is denial of truth, it is living in the past, it is the original sin; meaning missing the mark( not to be punished for that or similar nonsense people created out of fear)

For Maister Eckhart the word intellect seems to have entirely different meaning, perhaps coming from the word intelligence; he talks not merely about mechanical thinking and mechanical use of intellect but rather intellect as underlined deeper intelligence that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with regular conditioned thinking or some academical use of intellect.  Intellect in the sense of using a reason is absolutely useless It can be used in the Math or the science, but not in God!  There are many more proves in Meister’s readings, that the regular intellect is not applicable, for example when he says:” It is free  of all names and is devoid of all forms, quiet empty and free as God is empty and free himself. It is so entirely one and simple, as God is one and simple, that no one can see inside it in a particular manner” (163 ).  And what use of intellect implies; it implies of having a position, to look at things in separation in order to analyze, it requires to use names and analyze forms, it is opposite of being empty and free, because you can not be empty and free if you have attained some intellectual position about given problem.

Another extraordinary example is on page 206 when Eckhart says: “Now they who wish to be poor in spirit, must be poor in all their knowing so they have no knowledge of anything, neither of God, nor of creature, nor of themselves.”  This is very important to understand, because if the person is attached to intellectual approach he is obviously full of knowledge and full of creatures.  It has to be transcended.  Our own intellect has to be left behind; otherwise we operate in dead zone – in past, we are again lost in time and time is obstruction to God as Meister Eckhart mentions so many times throughout his book.  Eckhart approach is contrary to these; it is transcending all problems and positions all together by taking “leave of yourself” (6).  One of the most powerful proves of the intellect not being used in living in God is when Eckhart says: “ if someone else wishes to speak in the temple, than Jesus must be silent, as if he were not at home, and indeed he is not at home in the soul for there are strangers there with whom the soul speaks.  If Jesus is to speak in the soul, than she must be alone and must herself be silent if she is to hear Jesus” (156).  If the intellect, as we think of intellect means thinking and reasoning; that obviously implies noise and not silence, and obviously; we can not listen in such intellectual noise.  Another example:  “God wishes the temple to be empty, so that there shall be nothing but himself, and he feels so much at home in the temple, whenever he is alone in it” (152).  Surely; if you are lost in the intellectual analysis there is no space for God.  You will crate your own God, depending on your conditioning, but of course your personal God has absolutely nothing to do with God, it will merely be just another thought.

If person has not understood the problem of thinking and time and analysis, which is the intellectual approach, he will be forever lost in creating only the images of God without any potential for actual experiencing God or being in God as Meister Eckhart calls it.  I understand that this is very complicated readings for someone who is use to the only intellectual – academical approach.  It is very simple: if person reads it from the academical – analytical point of view he/she will not understand, but if person reads it without any judgments, if he/she reads it with his/her heart and not their little conditioned mind; he/she will understand that intellectual approach has very little value.  Comparative or academical – separative style of reading and understanding will keep you from seeing the genius and profound beauty of the Meister Eckhart teachings.  These are the most beautiful transformative readings that has ever been created.  It is up to every person to choose to go into it on deeper level, only thing that is required is to take leave of ourselves, because if we take leave of our self: “then God must enter into us” (3).  But we do not know how to do that, and therefore we loose our self in the images we create about it, which of course are the products of our intellect and which separates us from it in the first place.

Even Eckhart asks: “ how it is possible for someone who has been born and who has reached the age of reason (that’s what intellect means for us in the West – reason) to be free of images as they were before they existed, even thought they know many things, all of which are necessarily images, how then can such a person be free of them” (158).  And Eckhart offers a solution when he says: “ I remained free and empty in this present moment……than I would be a virgin unburdened by any images, just as certainly as I was before I existed” (159).    Being in this present moment implies obedience and not being lost in time.  Not to be lost in time and understanding or rather actual seeing the truth of it requires no intellect at all.  You either see it or not.  You might understand it intellectually little bit after some analysis, but intellectual understanding is not the same as actual seeing.  You see, intellectual understanding is not the actual experience.  Intellectual understanding is merely just another image.

That we may actually see the truth of God and may actually live in God, untroubled by any images about God, in that help us God. Amen.

The “Miracle” Of Abundance Consciousness

So there we were, my husband and I, in our mid fifties, having to shut down our 8-year-old, online animation software company after pouring our entire life savings into it. Seeing our money gradually disappear during those years was like squeezing honey into hot tea and watching it melt away. The reason I use honey as an analogy is that we really loved our business and there was a certain sweetness in giving all we had for something we believed in so dearly.

I will never forget the feeling of letting our staff go during that last year, little by little… and moving out of our space… and closing down the websites… and turning off the phones. Can you imagine what it was like for my husband and myself to have nothing but credit cards left… at the age where we should begin winding down to retire?

Yesterday I heard on the news that President Elect, Mr. Obama, is inheriting one and a half million people having lost their jobs in the U.S. My heart goes out to these people because I personally know the terror of having nothing, not knowing where the rent money will come from and continuing to borrow, borrow, borrow to pay all the credit card bills.

Obviously, this huge provocation in our lives was cause to rise to the truth of who we really are, and to what is truly important. Our efforts doubled to wipe out whatever unknown, unseen resistance to abundance was holding us in this pattern of not “having,” although we were applying all of the teachings about “allowing” from Abraham, “scientific prayer” from Ernest Holmes, and many other teachings from amazing, awakened beings like Byron Katie, Eckhart Tolle, Ramana Maharshi, Pujya Deepakbhai, Lester Levenson and more. But why was “The Secret” not working for us, not to mention for so many other people we knew who were also applying these teachings? Something was missing. We were in the dark, but the dawn was breaking…

Finally, the Light has begun to fill our lives with Its Presence. Of course, It was always there, for It is who we are. But now we are waking up to our own divine presence. I don’t claim this as a boast about my husband and myself; what I’m saying is that we are examples of a higher consciousness that has inevitably become more alive in our culture today. What has happened is an Awakening, and I see it wherever I turn. Tens of thousands of people are awakening to some degree, all over the planet. For my husband and I, it has been a very long journey.

We are discovering through experience, which heretofore was intellectual understanding or a deep sense of knowing, that everything we could ever want is already here, within us. So our so-called struggle to make money, to allow abundance, to prosper, to get rich, to have abundance consciousness, was all affirming that we did not have that which we very much desired. An element of this awakening, that we are discovering as we are gradually “waking up,” is that our attachments (and aversions) are losing their potency and we are becoming more neutral about whatever is happening. We are also losing our attachment to any outcome.

The magic of all this has been such a surprise for us – it is that as we become less attached, this is creating an “opening” for having. It is dissipating the resistance that we have been unconsciously creating by being so very attached to wanting. And so the miracle that we have discovered is that the less we want, the less we are attached, the bigger becomes the opening to “allow” abundance to land in our laps. Now, instead of spending so much time worrying, we are spending more and more time letting go, surrendering to the truth of our Being, which is where abundance and freedom live. And that is our highway to abundance consciousness.

www.cbc.ca Eckhart Tolle is considered one of the world’s most influential spiritual teachers – a master of inner calm and peace. In a nutshell, he teaches that you are not your mind. In fact, Eckhart says, your mind is your worst enemy. It overtakes the real you and creates thoughts that make you miserable. So if you want to achieve peace, you’ve got to disassociate yourself from your mind. The key ? Live in the present. Eckhart sums it all up in his book ‘The Power of Now.’ He wrote it in Vancouver, where he now lives. The book came out in 1997 and has sold more than five million copies, thanks, in large part, to an on-air plug from Oprah. She’s also a big fan of Eckhart’s follow-up book, ‘A New Earth.’
